Unlike activity metrics that might track surface-level actions (like opening an app or landing on a page), engagement metrics dig into behaviors that indicate real value: Are users completing important tasks? Are they returning? Are they exploring more of your product over time?
One composite metric that helps summarize this is the Product Engagement Score (PES). This typically combines adoption, retention, and stickiness. PES gives a high-level view of overall product health. But PES alone isn’t enough. It’s a starting point. Think of PES as your product’s “health score.” If you only track PES without understanding what’s behind it, you’re flying blind. In some cases, a product can show a high PES but mask drop-offs in a core segment or feature. Digging deeper is always worth it.
Remember, metrics are tools—not goals. The moment we start optimizing for numbers rather than behaviors, we risk losing the plot.
Tracking User Activity and Retention
Start with the classics: DAU/WAU/MAU (daily, weekly, monthly active users). These are foundational. They tell you if people are showing up. But they don’t tell you if people care. They can spike with a marketing push and vanish a week later. This is why context matters.
That’s where stickiness (DAU/MAU ratio) is critical. If you have 100,000 MAUs but only 5,000 DAUs, your stickiness is 5%. That means most users aren’t coming back daily. Depending on your product category, this might be expected—or it might signal disinterest. For B2B tools used only during planning phases, weekly stickiness might be a better metric.

Feature Usage Depth is about how comprehensively users explore. Are they using the full set of functionalities or just one toggle? This is especially important in SaaS, where deeper usage often correlates with higher retention and upgrade potential.
At Cloudinary, when we tracked users who interacted with at least 3 subfeatures, we found a 60% higher likelihood of upgrading. That insight alone reshaped our onboarding flow—we nudged users to explore more early on.
These insights allow you to do prioritization with data, not assumptions. Maybe a feature you thought was MVP material is just noise. Maybe a forgotten one is actually a core habit driver.

Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT) is about micro-interactions. After a support chat or a feature use, you ask: “How satisfied were you?” It gives real-time feedback and helps catch frustration early.
But don’t stop at the scores. Open-ended feedback is where the gold is. I once worked with a company where NPS was decent, but users kept calling the interface “clunky” in comments. We dug in, redesigned onboarding, and NPS went up 20 points in 2 quarters.
